Crisis of identity: discovering your ‘story’

I’m smack dab in the middle of an identity crisis. Oh, I know who I am: a middle-aged Christian woman and married mother of an adult child. I work as an editorial and advertising coordinator for a commercial magazine publisher (see About Me). My Facebook profile describes me as a lover of words, kitties, laughter, yoga and animal print. And sparkles. I’m also a published author (see Links) of nonfiction and fiction. However, I’ve been questioning my “identity” over the past few weeks in relation to my “story.” I’ve never understood what that means. Until now. For me, my story translates into what I’m called to write. In “Trusting the process…,” I talk about completing the first draft of a sweet romance. But herein lies the crux of my “crisis.” While preparing to write the second draft, I realized I possess a different story to tell. I shared this revelation with my husband, who said, “Why can’t you write both?” Indeed.

Mind, body connection: 7 easy steps to maintaining balance

Usually when I awaken, my mind is fuzzy. A cottony tangle of sleepy remnants harvested over the previous seven hours. Yesterday morning, however, the synapses knitted together a single thought: balancing the mind-body connection. I could ask myself why I attempted to make sense of a topic that begs deeper scrutiny at any time other than 4:15 in the morning. But if I were to venture a guess, I’d say it’s because my sub-conscious was trying to get my attention to validate: I’m out of balance! This led me to check in with Google, which turned up these seven steps as a useful check-and-balance system for re-establishing and maintaining a mind-body connection: 1) take time each day to quiet the mind and pray/meditate; 2) eat a healthy diet; 3) exercise every day; 4) prioritize restful sleep; 5) release emotional toxins (i.e., let go of past hurts, disappointments and anger); 6) nurture loving relationships and 7) enjoy wholehearted laughter at least once daily.

Who would’ve guessed that Henry Ford would not only design the Model T, but also discover the fountain of youth? For years I thought I’d know it all when I hit the mid-century mark. Funny, but it seems there’s no end to what I’m learning. And that, my friends, is the secret to staying young. Because when we stop learning, we essentially stagnate. My acupuncturist recently told me I possess a ‘youthful’ energy. What a compliment, and one I ascribe to my lifestyle—of working out and practicing yoga, taking naps when necessary, participating in writing workshops, devouring books, volunteering and stepping outside of my comfort zone. Laughter is another element that I credit for my youthful energy and which sounds good at any age. Oh, and remember: accessorize with a smile.

An amazing life

I spent the past 31 days reciting a positive affirmation each morning. I practice Bikram yoga, attend church, volunteer my time, share laughter with friends and family, work in a field I’m passionate about and engage in fulfilling hobbies. I wake up every day and choose happiness, yet I seem to be missing something. Through Family Share and its 15 steps to ensure an amazing life, however, I discovered a few missing links.

  1. Connect with yourself and others
  2. Live in the present
  3. Always create
  4. Cultivate an “attitude of gratitude”
  5. Choose a mentor wisely
  6. Give your body the gift of rest and relaxation
  7. Eat for happiness (skip processed foods, enjoy healthy fats)
  8. Cleanse your body
  9. Cleanse your mind
  10. Cleanse your spirit
  11. Establish healthy boundaries
  12. Let go of anything that doesn’t serve you
  13. Set SMART goals (specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, timely)
  14. It’s a practice, not a perfect

Happy anniversary to me

Two weeks ago I celebrated a momentous occasion: my one-year anniversary with the publishing firm I work for.  In some ways, I can hardly believe 365 days have come and gone since my first day on the job, but in other ways, it feels as if I’ve been a part of the team for years.  In my experience — whether it’s a job or a new friend or group of people — when the dynamics are aligned just so, I think it’s only natural to move into that empty spot waiting to be filled by our unique personality and skills.  I think that says a lot about ourselves to be able to fit in, and about the people we’re with.  As for my job, I hope I’m there for a while … as long as I’m still learning and still gaining experience doing what I love.  Here’s to another year: of knowledge, of success and continued laughter.
