Letting go of the hurt

We are only victims if we allow ourselves to be. ~ McCartney Green

My feelings were hurt first thing in the morning.  As I lie in bed, tears pooled in the corners of my eyes and my heart ached.  It was Mother’s Day and I had big plans in the afternoon and evening but now, I didn’t even want to get up for the day.  After a half hour or so, I dried my tears and changed for the gym.  I received an apology by text (and later in person) and knew I had a choice to make.  I could either hold onto the hurt or let it roll off my back and move forward with a good attitude.  I spent an hour at the gym working up a sweat and working off any residual frustration and came home with a softened heart to a small pile of wrapped gifts.  Later in the day, I enjoyed a date with my daughter, which consisted of opening presents, dining, shopping, talking and laughing, and then returning home to watch a chick flick together and soak in the hot tub.  The day was close to perfect, and I believe it had everything to do with making a choice to let go of the hurt.  I’m grateful I did.

Do you hold on to the hurt or let it go as quickly as possible?

Refocusing our attention

Recently, I read that instead of expecting a friend, or child or spouse to meet our needs, we’re supposed to try to be the best friend, or parent or spouse we can be.  I’ve been thinking about that concept a lot lately.  I think it’s an idea that can also be applied to other situations, as well, like when we desire something — whether it’s a material item or the fruition of a dream.  Rather than wallowing in our frustration at not being able to have whatever it is we want at the time, we can choose to refocus our attention off of ourselves until the timing is right for us to achieve the prize.  Hopefully, we’ll get so wrapped up in a good cause, or new venture or countless other things, that before we know it, we’re at the finish line.  And by the end of our journey, we may also discover we’re the very best fill in the blank we can be.

What things do you throw yourself into to bide your time?
