As you wait for better days, don’t forget to enjoy today,
in case they’ve already started. ~ Robert Brault
Sometimes, in life, we feel our hands are tied pertaining to certain things — like staying at a job that’s lost its appeal or sacrificing one thing for the good of another. But I believe, most often, we really do have a choice and we’re simply unwilling to change the status quo. So if we choose to wait for better days, we must make the decision to be happy where we’re at. Or be miserable and perhaps miss out on the best thing that may ever happen to us. Yesterday during the first savasana in Yoga, the teacher instructed the students to mentally validate ourselves with a mantra of sorts to come back to. Mine was: “I am strong, I am healthy, I am happy.” Because that is what I choose to be today … while I wait.
How do you remember to enjoy today while waiting for better days?

One thing one should NOT do is reflect on the past, especially if they were better days. It’s all nostalgia and it hurts. To appreciate the moment while waiting for happier times is to create something. You might write, paint, compose music, scrapbook, et cetera. There’s a sense of accomplishment when you produce something that had not been there before. I’m a 35-year-old college undergrad and life is horrific, so I write or paint daily to feel good and trust that better days are to come. Good Brault quote! I needed that.

~ thank *you* for suggesting ways to to appreciate “the waiting place.” While I was a 40+ college undergrad, I got into fitness. This has helped keep me sane(r), as well as set me on a healthier path in this next season of life. But your response also reminded me why I need to get back to my writing. For me, to create is to find true happiness and a better day today.

Thanks for that! I needed to hear that today. I am the most impatient person ever and if things don’t happen quickly, I feel unhappy. It’s good to hear some validation that I can chant! 🙂

~ you’re welcome, Victoria! I may top you in the impatience area; however, it’s a learning process, isn’t it? Baby steps. Just start with today 😉
